Community Projects
As the explorers travel
across South America they participate in numerous community
projects, aimed at developing Anglo-Latin American relationships.
Schools
Programme
The responsibility for future preservation
of our global heritage lies with today's youth. Therefore,
in an attempt to foster greater understanding of one
another's cultures, the Kota Mama Expedition brings
together students from schools in Europe and South America.
A satellite phone link connects school children on both
continents, providing them with a unique opportunity
to speak to one another and exchange
information.
During
Kota Mama V the following European schools will participate
in a live satellite link up -
Le Rocquier School - St Clements,
Jersey Southbank International College - London
Schools throughout Europe and South America will also
follow the expedition on the Internet.
At the school in Vallegrande members from the expedition
team will install two computers and deliver new textbooks,
purchased in country, to the pupils.
The
Seed Fund
Excessive rainfall in Guanay in the first
months of 2001 destroyed many of the town's crops, thereby
affecting many people in this Bolivian town. Having
discovered their plight the Scientific Exploration Society
raised money to assist the local people regain their
livelihoods. The original donation target of $500.00
was far exceeded enabling the SES to buy the necessary
seeds for crop re-plantation.
Medical
Projects
In La Paz and Santa Cruz incubators, donated
by the SES, have been installed to the hospitals. At
the clinic in Vallegrande members from the expedition
team will assist with the refurbishment of the children's
ward. In addition they will take delivery of donations
of surgical equipment. An invaluable contribution to
the surrounding community.
Dental
Programmes
As the members of
the expedition move through Bolivia dental treatment
will be offered to communities and villages located
across the route. Two dentist have been appointed to
the expedition, to be assisted by other team members.
On previous expeditions the Kota Mama expedition has
provided assistance to the people of Guanay in the form
of medical aid. Glaxo SmithKline donated equipment for
anaesthetising as well as a Star Fax with which the
clinic could conduct biochemistry tests. This equipment
will be of immense value in improving the standard of
healthcare that the clinic is able to offer.
World
Vision - Hospital Boat
The Amazon Region
comprises of 9,200 riparian communities spread across
1,100 rivers. The "Hospital Boat", a project
of World Vision and the Presbyterian Church of Manaus,
extends its support to 800 riparian families who live
within a 20-mile radius. The project is aimed at assisting
the families with agroforestry techniques, providing
them with curative and preventative medicines, and educating
them on how to improve their nutrition and hygiene.
The medical staff on the Kota Mama expedition joined
the "Hospital Boat" once they reach Porto
Velho, in Brazil on 23 July.
