30 August
On the Amazon

The water logged bow section of the central hull of KM3 is now getting very low in the river, and as the Atlantic waves pound her she is absorbing water more quickly. We have now removed the jaguar figureheads, and have stowed them on the support vessel to reduce the weight on the bow. All other weight that can be taken off has been removed and the crew on board has been reduced to four. On 1 September we must cross the hazardous Baia do Marajo to reach Belém. We have to sail across 42 km of rough water with strong currents and powerful tides. KM3 is sinking lower all the time and will have to be nursed into her final destination. At Belém the figurehead will be put on again. On 29 August Brazilian gun boat PARATI (P13) came alongside KM3 with congratulations from the Brazilian Navy.
