24 August
On the Amazon

On the 21st and 22nd August we sailed into a Force 4-5 wind. We were tossed among white-capped waves, which rose to heights of 5 feet. As we battled the fierce winds, the crew of KM3 sought shelter whenever possible along the jungle-covered banks. However, despite our caution, the outrigger hull, which was originally damaged in the Madeira cataracts, suffered badly and became distorted and sodden.

KM3 had to be beached finally, 660 km from the Atlantic. However, we re-rigged the boat, which is now sailing on as a catamaran. We are making good progress, up to 18 km per hour. The weather has now improved. Our medical team is on shore, busy with their work.

KM3's damaged outrigger lies abandoned
