The Scientific Exploration Society (SES) is conducting a seven-phase
expedition named Kota Mama across South America. Expedition
members have been sailing across the South American river network,
to prove that the ancient people of this region used traditional
craft, including reed boats, to navigate the waterways for trade
and exploration. Kota Mama, means "Mother of the Lake"
in the language of the Bolivian Aymara Indians who built the
expedition's reed boats. This ambitious and challenging expedition
is being carried out under the leadership of explorer Colonel
John Blashford-Snell. Five phases of this exciting expedition
have now been concluded.
Kota Mama VI will take place between 22 June and 7 August 2007
to explore what is thought to be the site of the Earth’s most
recent ‘big’ meteorite impact, the Interralde Crater. Its location
is so remote that scientific investigators have only visited
it twice. SES proposes to conduct an in-depth survey of the
area under the direction of geologists from Sergeotechmin, the
Bolivian Geological Institute.
