Kota Mama IV

1st August - 1 October, 2002

This expedition follows Kota Mama III, one of the Scientific Exploration Society's largest and most vigorous expeditions. Two traditionally built boats reached Belém in Brazil on 6 September 2001 after an historic voyage of almost 4300 km from the Andes to the Atlantic in 83 days. Exciting archaeological discoveries were made in Bolivia and we now return to follow up on these finds and investigate new leads.

Kota Mama IV will be split into 2 stages - with each stage being a month long.

Stage I

The team will work alongside local Bolivian archaeologists in dense forests examining several important pre-Inca or Inca sites in the mountains near Samaipata. One area we will visit is Parabanocito, where we will follow up on a discovery made in 1999 of a 14th Century Inca road as well as strange circular structures whose function is as yet unknown. We will also travel to the Amboro National Park, a region where archaeological examinations have never been carried out before. Local people of this area speak of ruins in the jungle that date back to the Pre-Colombian era. This region is also believed by some to be the last refuge of the Incas.

Stage 2

During the second stage of the expedition we will use local mahogany boats to explore sites along the Beni River that were discovered during Kota Mama III - sites that require further investigation and conservation. Places we will study include a cemetery at the confluence of the Kaka and Beni Rivers, Petroglyphs in the spectacular Beo Beo Gorge and a burial site at Puerto Salinas. This area has hardly been touched by human settlements and abounds with wildlife such as capybara, caiman, anaconda, monkeys and a plethora of birds. We will therefore conduct wildlife studies throughout this stage.

Community aid projects, which consist of medical, dental and educational
work, will be carried out during the expedition.

Costs

The cost of the expedition is £2600 per stage or £3000 for the whole expedition. This includes return airfare, all accommodation, transport, food and the briefing weekend.

Do You Need Special Skills?

The expedition is split into the two stages to allow explorers the flexibility to join the entire expedition or a part of it. This is a very vigorous and demanding expedition, which could reveal many secrets of ancient civilisations. Some knowledge of Spanish is essential. We are searching for doctors and dentists as well as people with experience in surveying, archaeology, biology, IT and mechanics to join us on this exciting adventure.
